The Mystery of the Norton Sinkhole... Solved!
For the last few months, the mysterious sinkhole in the back car park has had everyone playing detective.
The theories came thick and fast...
"It's an old WWII air raid shelter!"
"No, it's an abandoned mine shaft!"
"I'm sure there used to be secret tunnels under here!"
Then someone vaguely remembered an enormous tree that once stood there... complete with childhood bike jumps around it many years ago.
Enter chief excavator Simon, armed with nothing more than a shovel, determination and a refusal to be beaten. After some serious hand digging, reinforcements arrived in the shape of Andrew Tester from AB Basements and a mini digger.
The verdict?
No hidden bunker. No secret tunnels. No wartime mystery.
Just one absolutely enormous old tree stump that had slowly rotted away underground, leaving the void that eventually swallowed part of the car park!
Mystery solved... stump removed... and a lot of sweat invested along the way.
A huge thank you to Simon and Andrew Tester for putting in some serious graft to get it out. The area will now be made good, and hopefully the end of future sink holes 👏🌳🚜
